How did your shoot with Sijia go?
I always love shooting with Sijia. We have shot together a few times before and she is in my book. She has a very interesting presence and I enjoy our conversations. Her cats were having sex under the bed the whole time. Haha. She had just woke up and I brought her coffee. We decided to take every photo in bed. A good shoot with a good friend, for sure.
Can we photograph the female body differently in a more powerful way?
I mean the female body has probably been photographed more than anything else in history. I think it’s clear that the female body is the power – not the photo. With a photo, we are just bringing this power to light. Obviously, it’s important to be respectful of the person you are shooting. Female or male or neither or both.
What inspires you?
Movies inspire me a lot. When I see a good movie, I always want to make a movie or a set of photos. Women inspire me clearly. Passing a unique face on my walk home is hugely impactful on my work. Lately, I also find myself wondering if ageing inspires me. I’m 31 now. I don’t know. It’s a trip. Literally.
How would you define beauty?
Beauty is a natural state. It’s something you are or something you become. Like a sweater or a pair of jeans, it looks best when it’s most comfortable. I think beauty is a state of mind, body and soul. Beauty is time spent. Beauty doesn’t fade, it ages. I truly think many of the most mundane things are beautiful. Beauty is so complex – which is why I’m almost definitely making no sense right now.
Film or digital?
What makes you happy?
Being home with my girlfriend watching TV on the couch … my dog in my lap. A glass of wine or whiskey. Waking up next to my partner everyday makes me happy. Really. Sometimes, she even makes coffee before I get up! Also, my little brother and my sister-in-law just had a baby and that makes me very happy.
What’s next for you?
I’m moving to LA next month. I’m still going to shoot all the time, but I’m mostly going to bring my acting career back to life. I miss the other side of the lens.
