Bed & Breakfast

simon gustavsson

Simon Gustavsson is a 25-year-old photographer from Gothenburg, Sweden. His main focus is portrait and lifestyle photography. Recently he has been shooting a lot of 35mm film and he’s currently working on his first book.

How did the idea for the series come about?

I live in Sweden and not the part of Sweden where winter is beautiful, Gothenburg just gets grey and boring. In the winter I need to find good places to shoot inside and I don’t like studio photography that much. My friend’s parents have this beautiful 19th century house which they rent out rooms in as a bed and breakfast.

How do you approach these intimate shoots?

I think Linnea and I share a lot of views on photography in general so this makes her easy to work with. Talking about things and music are always a good idea, not just poses and photography. And of course having a good idea of what result you actually want before you start shooting.

Can we photograph the female body differently in a more powerful way?

Of course we can and there a lot of ways to do this. But what I think is more important is to know where the image is going to be presented. Context is everything, there are places where the female body should be powerful and there are places where it should not.

What inspires you?

Other photographers first and foremost. Henrik Purienne, Jesse Herzog, Vincent Perraud and Angelica Swanström to mention a few. I always listen to music when I think of new things I wanna shoot. The Tallest Man on Earth, Bob Dylan and a lot of music in Swedish for example.

How would you define beauty?

Effortlessness.

Film or digital?

Film is more fun and when it’s done right there is no photoshopper in the world that can reproduce that feeling. Digital gives you a more secure result though. I mix because of money.

What makes you happy?

The feeling of evolving. When you think a new thought, doing something different or seeing something you never seen before.

What’s next for you?

I’m working on a printed portfolio. I have some stories I know I wanna shoot as soon as the weather gets better. Summer time is going to be so much fun!
