Girl From Another
World

Liz Fang is a 25-year-old Chicago based photographer whose work focuses on the dynamic between light and colour. Uninspired by traditional fashion photography, Liz sets out to redefine feminine beauty and challenge the rules of the fashion world. She likes cats and takes her coffee with cream and 5 sugars.

How did the idea for the series come about?

Victoria messaged me one day saying she ordered a bunch of colourful wigs and that we should shoot with them. The wigs were so retrofuturistic and colourful that at first I had no idea what I was going to do with them. But then I was in line at the grocery store and thought that it would be funny to shoot a series about a space-age alien girl doing her best to fit in on earth, struggling with the mundane chores of everyday life, just like everyone else.

How did your shoot with Victoria go?

Really smoothly since this isn’t the first time we’ve shot together. Both of us are such sticklers for detail that everything about the shoot from the nail colour to the locations was planned well in advance. The promise of post-shoot pizza helped too.

Can we photograph the female body differently in a more powerful way?

Absolutely! I’m tired of seeing female bodies photographed like a commodity and objectified through the cisnormative heteronormative lens of society. Photography should be used to celebrate the mystery and sensuality of femalehood in all shapes, sizes, colours, and genders. Our bodies tell stories and our photographs must reflect that.

What inspires you?

Female photographers, winter sunsets, my partner, and Frida Kahlo.

How would you define beauty?

Beauty is an expression of genuine love and passion.

Film or digital?

Digital because you always get a second chance.

What makes you happy?

The love of my life, cat videos, taking pictures.

What’s next for you?

The usual stuff: thrifting, meetings over coffee, organizing shoots, and editing photos. I am also getting ready to be part of a gallery exhibition next year and I am pretty excited/terrified since it will be my first show ever!
