I’m Not Your Dream Girl
Ramona Deckers is an Amsterdam-based photographer. Her photographs are raw, uninhibited, and lay bare private moments. Her love of art allows her to get close to her subjects and reach a level of intimacy, honesty and realism which opens the door to a beauty of the natural kind. Working with analogue equipment forces her to be aware of every frame and invites an element of magic and mystery into the work process. She loves to shoot in natural light as she wants to show things as they are, in their natural glory. For this series, she’s teamed up with the stunning Roze.
How do you approach these intimate shoots?
These shoots happen very organically. In general, the people I photograph feel very at ease around me, so all this comes naturally. For me, these kinds of shoots feel like a normal day at the office, but I can imagine that’s not the case for everyone. Of course, it also depends on the type of girl. It’s fun when you pick a girl and we’re just letting go not worrying about the outcome. You yield the best results.
“Power has nothing to do with physical strength/appearance. It’s about your level of comfort with yourself. But also, your vulnerability.“
Can we photograph the female body in a more powerful way?
Yes, the (female) body can be powerful. First of all: what is your definition of power? It can have more than one meaning. Power has nothing to do with physical strength/appearance. It’s about your level of comfort with yourself. But also, your vulnerability. Your self-belief. Your perseverance. To not take life so seriously. All these things. You can discover this in someone’s eyes and/or body language in a portrait. When I see this, I’m in love with the portrait (this goes for ANY body).
Your ideal morning?
There are different scenarios. I’ll give you one. I love waking up early together with my husband. And he takes me to the Conservatory Hotel in Amsterdam where we go for breakfast. I need a coffee as soon as I wake up, so that’s the first thing I’ll have. We converse and go over the day. Then we go home and I’ll get ready for my kickboxing class. After that, lunch and ideally a photo shoot for my ongoing Amsterdam Girls series.
What makes you happy?
So many things. A coffee in the morning. A good festival. Hanging out with my girlfriends. Cycling through my beloved city Amsterdam. A walk with my husband and my dog. A successful photo shoot. The list is long.
What’s next for you?
Lots of projects on the way. New York City for New Years. I recently joined a photography agency, so I’m excited to see where this is going to take us.
