Let's Start Over
Steve Zissou started shooting again in July this year, after a three-year break. He rediscovered his passion and feels an incredible joy whenever he holds the camera again.
How did the idea for the series come about?
I was tired of how everything must be perfect, not just in photography. When you look at billboards, everything is perfect: hair, make-up, a smile. All. On the other hand, personal trainers looking like Greek gods are telling you to change yourself. I had enough of this. I wanted something simple, without make-up and a hairdresser, without correcting everything in Photoshop. Cellulite? So what! A scar? After all, it may be the most beautiful scar in the world. True and natural images, true and natural people. That’s what I want. That’s the idea.
Can we photograph the female body differently in a more powerful way?
Of course. We can show the female body in a million ways. It all depends on how we perceive it though and on what kind of relation we create with the model at that moment.
What inspires you and how would you define beauty?
The human body, opposites, simplicity, nature, music, many things … Beauty is something that stops me and does not allow me to move for a moment.
Film or digital?
What makes you happy and what’s next for you?
Yoga, photography of course, not wasting time, meeting interesting people, driving a car (seriously, I love it), watching The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, shoes … it’s a long list. I don’t know what’s next, but I know it’s gonna be good!
