Lucero & Majo

Geoffrey Yahya Vargas is a French director and photographer from Paris. After working in post-production, advertising and fashion he now tries to create a more personal universe in his photographs.

How did the idea for the series come about?

My series are usually based on improvisation and ideas that come during a shoot. But for this one I had an image of a girl kissing herself in a mirror in mind, and a track by Talking Heads – Psycho Killer. The rest was just thanks to good vibes of Lucero, Majo, and my assistant/wife. I guess solitude and isolation are sort of my main themes.

Can we photograph the female body in a more powerful way?

The female body is already full of power and character, it is just about being able to catch that authenticity.

How would you define beauty?

I want to say personality, charisma, and wildness.

“I think that all my inspiration comes from cinema. Films are everything to me.“

What inspires you and what makes you happy?

I think that all my inspiration comes from cinema. Films are everything to me. But I’m also inspired by music, books, the night life, and of course people. And what inspires me, makes me happy.

Film or digital?

I mostly shoot on film but I also love digital. To me film/digital are just tools, the result is what really matters.

Lastly, what’s next for you?

Well I want to shoot more with boys, and I want to keep on exploring the dark shadows that we find everywhere. Lots of new ideas on my mind. And after 5 years, I just moved back to Paris with my wife so that’s the beginning of a new area for us.
