Ryan Francisco is a 27-year-old emerging photographer born in Houston, Texas. Francisco attended the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts majoring in Theatre. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Photocommunications from St. Edward’s University with Magna Cum Laude honours. Francisco hopes that her body of work will invite viewers to find their own hidden connections with her photographs. Encouraging viewers to create their own stories and slowly witness the play of illusion that is correlated into some of her work.
How would you define beauty?
I would define beauty through self-confidence. A person who is self-aware of who they are mentally and feels comfortable within their own skin.
What do you love about photography?
What I love about photography is being able to bring to life and capture the random ideas that cross my mind.
What inspires you?
People. I love creating with my closest friends. There is a sense of comfort and trust that has already been built between us. From there we can push one another without second-guessing on our thoughts or actions. I also love collaborating with new people as well and also slowly developing that same bond I have created with my closest friends.
Film or digital?
Film. Forever and always I will continue to shoot on film (as long as it is available). It’s something magical about film that keeps me constantly experimenting with different methods and still training myself to think within 24-36 exposures.
What makes you happy?
What makes me happy the most is being able to have the freedom to do what I
love, which is creating via photography. In addition, I love going out dancing whenever it is possible.
What’s next for you?
What’s next for me is to continue to participate in upcoming art shows around Houston this summer. I am also working on a second zine, Modern Girls II, with my collaborative partner, Dyan Cannon. We are hoping to release the zine at the beginning of Fall this year.
