Olivia

Gabriella Achadinha is 27 years of age. Born in Bloemfontein (South Africa) but have been living in Cape Town for the past eight years. She works in the film industry predominantly, in wardrobe and photography. She’s focusing on figures of contemplation in foreign landscapes/urbanscapes, and the beauty of stillness in usually chaotic spaces. Photographs tend to flow when on the road and in novel settings, oscillating between analogue and digital, Gabriella is drawn to all things cinematic, colorful and subjects deep with emotion.

How did the shoot with Olivia go and how do you approach these intimate shoots?

It went very well. I love collaborating/photographing with Olivia as she’s such a phenomenal woman. Strong, self-assured, humorous. The whole process was organic and free flowing. We talked about life, our current state of being, likes/dislikes, etc. It’s best to create a safe environment for such shots so shooting at a private home/apartment really helps.

“I feel if you’ve made the subject feel happy with how they are represented and remain closely aligned to your initial vision agreed upon with them then you’re set to go.“

Can we photograph the female body in a more powerful way?

Yes, photographers definitely can. I feel if you’ve made the subject feel happy with how they are represented and remain closely aligned to your initial vision agreed upon with them then you’re set to go. Whether it be a conceptual performative fine art shoot or a simple beauty/lingerie shoot, the aim is to create a piece together.

Your ideal morning?

Photographing. Either in a super beautiful natural location or a wonder of an architectural space. With a bunch of funny humans to chat with and photograph.

What makes you happy?

Summer storms, kind people, really bad old Vines, Pho Bo, J Dilla and Madlib on repeat, cinema, architectural spaces, hiking and reading.

What’s next for you?

I’ll be traveling to Europe and the States for the next four months, hopefully photographing as much as I can, collaborating on meaningful projects and learning, learning, learning.
