Hannah Ross is a 19-year-old analog photographer hailing from Kelowna, Canada. Specialising in shooting other young women, Hannah aims to capture the candid spirit and beauty of her subjects by shooting them in their most comfortable environment – their bedroom. Hannah is inspired by female empowerment and raw, unapologetic individuality.
How did the idea for the series come about?
I tend to do most of my shoots with girls in their own bedrooms, it’s kind of my niche as far as my photography style goes. There’s something so special about taking pictures of someone in the space in which they are most comfortable and safe, because it’s where you’re the most real, authentic version of ‘you’.
How do you approach these intimate shoots?
I always aim to make my models feel as comfortable and empowered as possible. Most of the people I shoot aren’t actual models, but instead people I come across in my life that I find unique and pretty, on the inside and out. I feel so incredibly lucky to shoot with people who are willing to be vulnerable and let themselves be photographed so intimately.
Can we photograph the female body differently in a more powerful way?
Firstly, we need to stop sexualising the female body and treating it as nothing more than a sex object. Secondly, we need to go easy on the photo editing, seriously. Everyone has flaws and imperfections, so why are we pretending otherwise and editing away all the little quirks that make us unique? The female body is perfectly imperfect, and that’s what makes it beautiful.
What inspires you?
I am inspired by empowering females. I am inspired by people who are unapologetically themselves, people who don’t give a shit what others think about them. I am inspired by raw, unrefined beauty.
How would you define beauty?
Beauty is being able to look in the mirror and be happy with yourself, to be able to accept yourself completely, flaws and all.
Film or digital?
Film for sure. It forces you to really take your time when shooting and put a lot of thought into each image you take. Also, I love not knowing how your photos will turn out until you get them developed, it can be so rewarding.
What makes you happy?
My friends, family, and boyfriend make me so happy. I am so blessed to be surrounded by so many lovely individuals in my life. Cats, coffee, photography, and mom jeans make me quite happy as well.
What’s next for you?
Who knows! Hopefully something big, we’ll see what life throws my way I guess!
