Welcome to My Sunday
Eva Abeling is an analog photographer originally from Bremen, Germany but now based in Barcelona. Her photography explores the most natural minutes of the day where you are just by yourself and feel all your vulnerability. Eva Abeling has exhibited her photographs in London, Barcelona and New York in Solo Exhibitions and Group Exhibitions.
Was there any exact moment in your life when you fell in love with photography?
It was around the time when I learned that the ancient Greeks had no word for the colour blue. I am always wondering how they described the sky. And the sea.
I never found it easy to describe my emotions and thoughts with words. I was scared they weren’t enough to be able to make myself understand. What does it mean to feel sad? Is it the kind of sad that makes all colours a shade darker or the kind of sad that makes the air around you colder? What does it mean to love? Is it the kind of love that makes everything soft or the one that reminds you of the wild ocean?
Analog photography is everything I believe in. It is still, soft, dreamy and magical. It lets me communicate my world.
“There are no truths or facts in my photographs. The viewer has to find its own subjective truth to the meaning. It is about noticing what emotions come up for you.“
How would you describe your style?
I would compare it to reading a poem. There are no truths or facts in my photographs. The viewer has to find its own subjective truth to the meaning. It is about noticing what emotions come up for you. Which memories, desires and dreams you remember. What kind of feelings stillness provoke in you. If you allow yourself to be vulnerable and authentic.
Can we photograph the female body in a more powerful way?
I never retouch the girls I have in front of the camera. When I ask to photograph a girl it’s because of her personality. Because of her soul. I want to capture their vulnerability, softness and stillness. Their emotions, desires and fears. I don’t prepare a shoot to only have one fixed outcome. Every day there is a new us. Any moment we can change from soft to energetic. I always to try to create the photographs depending on the girls‘ mood. For them to have a moment to learn about themselves. About how they feel and about what their dreams are.
Your ideal morning?
Waking up after the perfect hours of sleep. Lying with your eyes closed. Feeling the spring sun warm your naked body. Getting a good morning kiss from your loved one. Having a warm coffee in bed before a breakfast under the morning sun. Walking to the sea and having the first swim of the day in the salt water.
What makes you happy?
Swimming naked in the sea. Seeing and smelling it. Feeling it. Sharing delicious food under the full moon. Kisses that make you forget who and where you are. Thinking about all the fruits that I haven’t touched, sunsets that I haven’t smelled and words that I haven’t tasted yet.
