Davey Warren is a portrait and fashion photographer living in Toronto, Canada. Davey spent a very long time living in China where he worked for Vice Magazine documenting strange things with his camera and figuring out Mandarin. He returned to Canada some time ago and dove right back into shooting for magazines but shooting portraits and fashion instead. This is Davey’s third feature on herbeautymag, check the other ones here & here.
How did the shoot with Willy go?
It always goes great with Willy cause she’s a blast to work with. We’re good friends so we shoot together all the time when we can.
What is your best advice to those thinking about starting doing photography in 2017?
That’s a huge question. The only advice I can give is too be absolutely sure photography is what you want to do as a career. It can be a disgustingly nasty business and a thick skin comes in really handy.
Your ideal morning?
A lot of things here I shouldn’t mention haha!!! I like every morning to be a little different. Some mornings I’ll go out shooting first thing and skip breakfast. Other mornings I’ll take it slow with a coffee and breakfast and zen out a bit. It really depends on the day. During winter I hibernate a lot. I’d love to live somewhere that’s warm all year.
Big city life vs. nature & wilderness?
Well, I grew up in Toronto and spent a long time living in big cities in China so you could say I’m very comfortable with big city life. I love the country to relax sometimes but I need the speed of the big city.
What’s next for you?
So far it seems like I’ll be doing more of the same for a while taking ‘intimate portraits’ but I have plans for more books of street photography planned for the next couple of years. It never stops.
